| Methyl parathion or Penncap M (an encapsulated methyl parathion) are used extensively throughout the United States for controlling stink bug pests in soybeans, Glycine Max (L.) Merrill. However, this insecticide is highly toxic to mammals, birds, and non-target arthropods, and thus is less environmentally sound than other insecticides. For environmental and human health considerations, investigating alternative insecticides for control is desired. For this investigation, research based on field experimental data from Florida, Georgia, and Louisiana during the 1988 and 1989 growing seasons were employed. | A laboratory experimental auction was used to determine factors influencing the relative value consumers place on alternative retail beef packaging. Results indicate information is very important for the successful introduction and marketing of the vacuum skin package. Physical appearance of the beef plays a major role in purchasing decisions by consumers, with fat and shape significantly decreasing the value of beef in the vacuum skin package relative to beef in the overwrapped styrofoam tray package. Experimental economics procedures, when combined with traditional marketing research techniques, can provide useful information for marketing decisions and economic analyses. |

| Variability in feed prices and crop yields are important sources of risk to dairy farmers. A simulation model of a representative dairy farm was used to evaluate crop insurance and hedging as risk management strategies. These strategies lowered expected net returns but also reduced risk. The preferred set of strategies at lower levels of risk aversion included hedging and crop insurance, although a base scenario in which no risk management strategies were employed was also efficient. The preferred strategy at higher levels of risk aversion was a combination of crop insurance and hedging. |

This approach has been challenged by behavioural ecology theories that emphasize the primacy of the individual attempt to maximize its own fitness. | An understanding of changes in price volatility is of value to policy makers and exchange committee members as well as other participants in commodity futures markets. Previous research has studied volatility by measuring: 1) the flow of new information into the market, or 2) the effect that the structure of the futures market has on price volatility. In this paper, a model is developed which integrates these two themes in the literature to measure and explain price volatility in live cattle futures prices. | An eleven-region stochastic coefficient econometric model was estimated and used in an optimal control framework to evaluate the effectiveness of the dairy price support program and marketing orders in reducing and stabilizing government purchases of dairy products. The results showed significant pressure on the reduction of the support price both in the presence and absence of Class I differentials. The optimal control model also showed that the drop in price support levels did not dramatically alter the regional distribution of milk production. |

| Foram selecionadas seis áreas de estudo, Estação Ecológica de Aguas Emendadas-DF, Parque Nacional de Brasília-DF, APA Gama-Cabeça do Veado-DF, Silvânia-GO, Paracatu-MG e Patrocínio-MG na Chapada Pratinha (15-20º S e 46-49º W), três delas em unidades de conservação e três fora delas. Em cada área foram amostradas 10 parcelas de 1000 m² (20x50m). Todas as árvores a partir de 5 cm de diâmetro na base do tronco foram medidas e identificadas. A florística e a fitossociologia de cada área foi analisada e estas foram comparadas entre si pelos índices de similaridade de Sørense e de Morisita. | Entre novembro de 1987 e agosto de 1988, realizou-se um censo da frota artesanal da Rapôsa, principal comunidade pesqueira do litoral maranhense. Esta frota está composta por 221 embarcações) das quais 186 operam na pesca. É uma frota estruturalmente heterogênea, segundo o tipo de casco e o tipo de propulsão. As variações dos diferentes tipos, são representáveis pelo comprimento do barco. Definiram-se 4 estratos dentro desta frota, que são: 1. | Aplicações de inseticida biológico constituído de esporos do fungo Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch) têm controlado satisfatoriamente a cigarrinha-da-cana, Mahanarva posticata (Stal), importante praga da cana-de-açúcar, em Alagoas. Este trabalho analisa as deposições da aplicação aérea na cultura da cana-de-açúcar, utilizando traçantes químicos e corantes. Foram determinados os depósitos do magnésio em fitas de papel acetinado colocadas transversalmente à linha de vôo e mediante análises de gotas recolhidas em cartões kromekote dispostos paralelamente às fitas.
